Why not skip your contact lens fitting and what to expect?

Wearing contact lenses is not just a case of “take your lenses and go”. Especially for first-time wearers, proper application is essential for comfort, eye health and long-term satisfaction with lenses. Yet in this day and age, when the internet is full of instructions on how to fit lenses, many people underestimate it or even consider bypassing it altogether. Why doesn’t it pay off and what all goes into the application process?

What is a contact lens application and who is it for

Contact lens fitting is a professional eye examination associated with a check of the front segment of the eye, during which the optometrist will recommend the most suitable type of lenses for your eyes. In addition to diopters, the following are assessed:

  • the shape of the cornea,
  • the quality of the tear film,
  • eye sensitivity
  • and the way contact lenses are worn.

Contact lens fitting is one of the services we offer in our opticians. During the application we will recommend:

  • suitable lens types for your eyes,
  • how to handle contact lenses properly,
  • how to take care of them,
  • when to wear them
  • and when it is appropriate to give them a break.

Proper insertion and removal technique minimizes the risk of contact lens damage (e.g. tearing) and reduces the possibility of eye injury or infection.

“One of the most common problems for contact lens wearers is dry eyes, which can be associated with blurred vision. These difficulties are often related to long periods of time spent in front of a computer, being in an air-conditioned environment or inappropriate choice of contact lens material.”

Selection of lenses for trial

You can try the lenses on before you buy them. Something different suits each eye. Not only the curvature of the lens, but also its material and the environment of your eyes.

The first experience with contact lenses should always take place under the supervision of a specialist / optometrist. The app is not only for those who want contact lenses for the first time, but also for existing wearers who are struggling:

  • discomfort,
  • dry eyes,
  • change of diopters
  • or want to switch to a different type of lens (e.g. daily disposable, multifocal or toric).

“You get 5 pairs of daily disposable lenses or 1 pair of multi-day lenses to try out. We have a wide selection of trial lenses available, but some types need to be ordered. If the type you choose doesn’t suit you, we will try a different material or brand together to make sure the lenses really fit.”

Why not skip the app

  1. We will measure the correct diopters for your contact lenses

Contact lenses are a medical device used to correct vision and their parameters should always be determined by a professional on the basis of an examination. Higher diopters are recalculated in contact lenses, so you may have different diopters in your glasses and different diopters in your lenses.

  1. We can help you choose the right type of lenses

Choosing contact lenses over the internet can be tedious and not always right. There are many materials and not all of them (even with the same curvature) have to suit your eyes. Instead of a long “scroll”, it is often better to spend an hour with a specialist.

  1. We check the condition of the cornea and conjunctiva

The optometrist will check that the surface of the eye is healthy and free of irritation. The application also includes instruction on proper hygiene to help prevent infections. Professional application reduces the risk of inflammation, corneal damage and lens intolerance when hygiene and the recommended regimen are followed, although the risk can never be reduced completely to zero.

Poorly chosen lenses can cause:

  • cutting,
  • burning,
  • Redness
  • or excessive dryness of the eyes.
  1. Save time and money

You cannot check the correct lens type by looking in the mirror. Thanks to professional application, you will avoid unnecessary exchanges, complaints and unpleasant trial-and-error. With astigmatic or multifocal lenses, this rule is doubly true.

You know that…? The cornea is one of the most sensitive tissues in the human body. Contact lenses lie directly on its surface and therefore any injury or infection can be very painful.

How long does the application take and what to take with you

Contact lens application usually takes about 45 – 60 minutes. The exact length depends on whether this is your first application, whether you already have experience with contact lenses, or whether you are dealing with specific needs (astigmatism, multifocal correction, dry eyes).

In order for the examination to go smoothly and for the results to be as accurate as possible, we recommend that you come without wearing contact lenses. If you normally wear them, leave them at home that day and bring the glasses you use.

Ideally bring:

  • glasses (current correction),
  • or a box of contact lenses you’ve worn before,
  • a list of problems you experience when wearing (dryness, cutting, blurred vision),
  • if you have one, also reports from previous eye exams.

You don’t have to have any special knowledge or worry about “getting something wrong”. The app also includes instructions on how to put on and take off the lenses, so everything is done calmly and under the supervision of a professional. The goal is not speed, but the safe and comfortable wearing of contact lenses in the long term.

The most common myths about lenses (and how it really is)

“I’m afraid the lens will go behind my eye.”

Don’t worry, the contact lens can’t go behind the eye. Anatomically, it’s not possible. If it’s not on the cornea, it can be in the corner of the eye or under the eyelid.

“It’s normal to sleep in contact lenses.”

The lenses can take it, but your eyes might not. Sleeping with lenses on that are not designed for that purpose greatly increases the risk of complications. You should always follow the recommendations of your optometrist or doctor.

“It doesn’t matter what artificial tears I use.”

Not all drops are suitable for contact lenses. Our opticians will advise you on which products you can safely use.

“You just need to know the diopters from your glasses.”

Dioptres for glasses and contact lenses may vary. They also address the curvature and diameter of the lens, which cannot be properly determined without an app.

“I need correction for distance and near, lenses are not for me.”

There are also multifocal contact lenses. It’s a bit of a compromise on which distance you want to see best. Multifocal lenses are most often used by wearers who were used to wearing contacts before.

“When I wear contacts, I don’t need glasses.”

Myth. Contact lenses should be a complement to glasses, not a replacement. Every lens wearer should have at least one pair of glasses.

“I have a no-rub solution, I don’t have to wash my lenses when I clean them.”

In fact, the wiggle increases cleaning efficiency by up to tens of percent, which is why we still recommend it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Vše probíhá v klidu a bez spěchu.
