Polarized dioptric glasses are the ideal solution for those who need vision correction while looking for effective protection from sun glare. In this article, we’ll explain how they work, who they help the most, and how they differ from other sunglasses options.

What is the polarization of glasses and what is it used for?

To understand the benefits of dioptric polarized glasses, let’s first look at the principle of polarization itself.

Light is an electromagnetic wave whose electrical oscillations run in all directions perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Such light is called unpolarized light. It can come from:

  • natural resources (for example, the sun or fire),
  • artificial sources (for example, fluorescent lamps or light bulbs).

When this unpolarised light hits a horizontal surface such as water, snow or road surfaces, partial polarisation occurs. The reflected light spreads mainly horizontally and causes an unpleasant glare. Our eyes instinctively squint as a result, preventing us from seeing comfortably. In the case of drivers or athletes, this can even be dangerous, so the choice of polarised glasses should not be underestimated.

A polarizing filter only lets light oscillating in one direction (usually vertically) through, thus eliminating unwanted horizontal glare. The result is fully polarized light that is much more pleasing to the human eye.

So who will appreciate polarized glasses the most?

Strong light glare is most often encountered during water activities, in mountain environments or when driving. In addition to UV protection, it also brings a significant increase in visual comfort through improved contrast, colour recognition or spatial perception. It is therefore suitable for:

  • the driver,
  • athletes,
  • tourists
  • and ordinary users in the city.

Also great for fishing, cycling, running or skiing. They are also recommended for people with increased sensitivity to light.

Polarising dioptric glasses

Dioptric polarized lenses are created by inserting a thin layer of polarizing material into the structure of the lens or onto its surface. If you wear dioptric glasses, lenses can be individually made for you that combine your dioptric correction with effective glare protection.

You can find the colour variants of the lenses in the swatches at our branches. The most common are brown, grey, grey-green and green. The lenses can be fitted in classic dioptric frames or sun frames, it just depends on your preference. The result is a stylish yet fully functional pair of dioptric sunglasses that provide not only sharp vision but also maximum protection.

“V Eye Studio Aleš Žejdl of course, we also have polarized non-dioptric glasses. However, even if you don’t need any vision correction or are not bothered by any eye defect, come to us and we will be happy to help you choose quality polarized glasses that won’t let you down in any activity.”

Polarized glasses are for everyone and can be adapted to any requirements. It doesn’t matter if you have dioptric correction for distance, near or wear multifocal glasses. All of these options can be made with a polarising treatment. The lenses can be supplemented with thinning, anti-reflective treatment or hydrophobic layers, which improve the comfort of vision and the care of the glasses, just as with conventional glasses. We will find out the dioptres during the eye examination or you can simply tell us.

The main advantages of polarized dioptric glasses:

  1. Vision correction without the need for contact lenses
  2. Sharp vision without glare
  3. Better contrast
  4. 100% UV protection
  5. Style and visual comfort
Please note: Polarising lenses can cause difficulty in reading displays such as navigation, head-up displays or some types of LCD screens. This should be taken into account when driving.

How does the polarising clip on dioptric glasses work?

Another option to protect your eyesight from glare and UV rays are dioptric glasses with a polarising clip. We have clip-on glasses available at all of our locations and some of them have a polarising clip. The sunglass clip, attached with a magnet, simply snaps onto regular dioptric glasses. The main disadvantage of this solution is that if the clip is not put on, there is a risk of losing or damaging it.

Polarising or photochromic glasses

In this case, it is not appropriate to discuss which is better, as these technologies are not “competing” but complementary. An advanced alternative is represented by polarizing photochromic (self-darkening) lenses - Transitions XTRActive polarizing.

These combine the advantages of polarisation and UV self-darkening. When activated outdoors, it achieves up to category 3 darkening, while polarization remains 90%. However, in the car, due to UV blocking by the windscreen, partial darkening occurs. If the discoloration is more than 45%, polarization is activated. These lenses provide 100% protection against UVA and UVB radiation and come in grey.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Ano, u nás v Očním studiu Aleš Žejdl nabízíme i praktické magnetické klipy. Když svítí slunce, jednoduše je nacvaknete na své brýle. Jen pozor když je zrovna nenosíte, snadno se někde zatoulají.

Můžu si nechat přidat polarizační filtr do svých brýlí dodatečně?

Ne, to bohužel není možné.

Můžu si nechat vyrobit polarizační čočky i s dioptriemi?
